AAG2016 Symposium Highlights Current Developments in Architectural Geometry

The AAG 2016 conference brings together researchers from academia, practice and the industry to present and discuss the challenges and opportunities emerging at the intersection between geometry and design. The conference is organized around keynote speeches, presentations of accepted papers and a complementing poster forum.

Once a niche topic, architectural geometry enjoys increasing interest from academics and practitioners from the fields of architecture, engineering, computer science and mathematics. The fifth edition of the Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG) symposia series brings together leading experts in architecture and applied geometry to explore the potential of modern geometric computing for architectural applications. The AAG2016 symposium takes place from September 9-13, 2016  at ETH in Switzerand.

Adaptive meshing for bio-directional information flow

Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages to the final construction. Modern geometric computing provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex shapes. On the one hand this opens up new horizons for architecture. On the other hand, the architectural context also poses new problems to geometry. Around these problems the research area of architectural geometry has emerged. The AAG2016 symposium is organised by the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication with the full support of ETH Zurich and its Department of Architecture. The Conference Chairs are Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler, both professors for architecture and digital fabrication at ETH Zurich.

The symposium begins with a set of two day workshops, followed by three days of conference activities. During the workshops, participants experience hands-on training with the latest computational design tools and collaboratively investigate their potential for architectural application. Workshop topics include the role of computational design in the generation of free form space frame structures the integrated design, simulation and fabrication of complex geometric surfaces with force-adaptive hot-wire cutting; and the use of virtual reality as a simulation tool for multi-user robotics constructions.

The symposium is a biennial event and in the past, it has been organized in different locations. The first and second editions took place in 2008 and 2010 in Vienna, the third edition took place in 2012 in Paris, and the fourth edition took place in 2014 in London. This is the fifth edition of the series.

The conference features keynote lectures by the internationally renowned experts Lord Norman Foster, Francis Aish, Werner Sobek, Erik Demaine and Urs B.Roth.

Their participation highlights the importance of the AAG symposia series as a central platform for the exchange of ideas in architecture and engineering, mathematics and computer science. In addition to the keynote lectures, the conference consists of presentations of peer-reviewed paper which highlight new innovations in the field.

AJ - Absolute Joint System participates to AAG 2016 with an interesting workshop, aiming to provide participants with the conceptual, technical and manufacturing framework through which they will better understand how to design space frame structures, building up in-situ a 1:10 scale prototype, using the AJ new technological solutions.
