Carlo Ratti Associati + Transsolar present ’Pick Your Climate’ reversing climate change in cities

Developed by design and innovation firm Carlo Ratti Associati together with the climate engineering firm Transsolar, Pick Your Climate is a demonstration project that looks at how to reverse climate change in cities. The project will be presented in the frame of INTERNI Open Borders, the annual event organised by INTERNI magazine at Milan State University during the Fuorisalone.
Inspired by cutting edge nanotech research from Stanford University, the Pick Your Climate installation will show how new photonic membranes that reflect solar radiation could help reduce extreme temperatures in our cities, at zero energy cost and zero water demand.
The Milan demonstrator will showcase three different materials to create three different climate modification options, namely: Greenhouse, Coolhouse, and Treehouse. The three displays use the UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index) to estimate how the average person would feel, taking into account a series of variables, including solar radiation, wind speed, mean radiant temperature of the area, ambient air temperature, relative humidity, and typical values for a person’s clothing factor and activity. Results are calculated based on data from Weather Underground service, and are updated every 15 minutes.
Pick Your Climate is a project at the intersection between design, architecture, and science, whose aim is to raise awareness of the possible strategies to tackle climate change.
''Architecture and design are now multidisciplinary, collaborative sciences, which must be open to contaminations and influences from other fields'' says Carlo Ratti, founder of Carlo Ratti Associati studio and Director of the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Following this approach, the exhibition provides an original interpretation to the Open Borders’ event theme”.
Pick Your Climate will be featured in the INTERNI Open Borders event, to be held at the Università Statale di Milano, via Festa del Perdono, 7, from the 11th to the 23rd of April 2016.
