Craig Dykers, principal, Snøhetta, will deliver the SOM Architecture and Urban Planning Lecture as part of the Spring 2016 Dean's Lecture Series on Fri., Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. in S. R. Crown Hall.

Dykers' lecture is titled "Why (do we) bother?":

Most people spend a good portion of their time finding ways to improve their lives. There is an inherent hunger that goes well beyond the need for food and shelter. In many ways life is synonymous with place. There is a constancy in life to create place and identity. Snøhetta is concerned with these things. These are the things that define the performance of our lives. Through our work with landscape, architecture, and identity design we evaluate the often unseen parameters of intentions. From the design of a birds’ nest to the Times Square Reconstruction, or from beehives to the SFMOMA expansion, our work aligns across all scales to offer an unhinged look at the created world.

Craig Dykers is a Founding Partner of the international design practice, Snøhetta. His interest in design as a promoter of social and physical well-being is supported by ongoing observation and contributes to the development of an innovative design process. Dykers has led many of Snøhetta’s prominent international projects, including the Alexandria Library in Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion in NYC. Craig is currently leading the design of the SFMOMA Expansion in San Francisco and the new Times Square Reconstruction in New York City, both of which will be completed later this year (2016). Snøhetta is also one of the seven shortlisted firms in consideration for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

Craig’s work has led to international awards and recognitions including the Mies van der Rohe European Union Prize for Architecture, the World Architecture Award, and the Aga Kahn Award for Architecture, among many others.
