International specialist launches staircase design competition: Two £2,000 cash prizes

The EeStairs Design Competition has been created to shine a light on the very best young designers in world and celebrate the evolution of architecture, interior and product design. No longer is staircase design simply about function, it has progressed into the creation of groundbreaking designs, use of innovative materials and environments capable of encouraging users to engage with their surroundings.

EeStairs is on the hunt for individuals who will look beyond staircases and balustrades as functional components of architecture, but instead combine practicality and artistic imagination to create truly outstanding designs. Open to anyone - the entries will be shortlisted by a panel of expert judges – before the winners are decided by public vote in February 2016. In March, two cash prizes of £2,000 each, will be awarded at a prize giving ceremony.

The contest will be split into two categories. In the Corporate Staircase category, EeStairs invites competitors to add functionality to a staircase in a corporate environment, so that it inspires employees and visitors to the workspace. Successful designs in the Repeatable Balustrade Design category will need be genuinely revolutionary, affordable and versatile – so that they are able to suit a range of applications. To add to the challenge, participants must design this quirky, distinctive and also repeatable balustrade design by only using a simple metal strip.

Winners of each category will be awarded a prize of £2,000 (€2,800/$3,100) and enjoy a trip to EeStairs’ headquarters in the Netherlands, in addition to extensive publicity for their designs.

EeStairs Creative Director, Cornelis van Vlastuin comments: “Outstanding staircase designs should help to tell a story, orchestrating a wonderful journey between the spaces they connect, or even separate. We’re proud of our ability to push the boundaries of what is possible and we’re calling on designers to not submit ‘good’ designs – but to aim for extraordinary.”
