Today is World Architecture Day-5 October 2015 and The International Union of Architects (UIA), representing the world’s 1.3 million architects, has announced the theme of World Architecture Day: Architecture, Building, Climate. UIA members, working bodies and partners will mobilize on 5 October to promote actions and solutions that apply the enormous power of architecture and urban design in coping with global climate change, one of the greatest challenges of our time. In addition,  according to the latest UIA news, among UIA members, some of them informed them of the celebration of the WAD in their countries: Australia in Sydney opera House and Costa Rica. UIA is also preparing a mini web site devoted to UIA members contributions to Climate change mitigation.

Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House
Bennelong Point
Sydney 2000
A flagship morning event to launch World Architecture Day 2015 through TED-style talks, short videos and social media to position Sydney in the global network of cities shaping their future by design.  Sydney-based multi-disciplinary design practices will share how they operate across the world – in partnership with global business and governments to deliver sustainable city infrastructure. The International Union of Architects has announced the theme for the 2015 World Architecture Day is: Architecture. Building. Climate.
Hear renowned Danish Architect Kim Herforth Neilsen from 3XN deliver the inaugural SAF Global Oration on how architecture can make a difference in society and for our environment.

Hear also how Australian architects are making a difference here and around the world - experiencing massive growth thanks to rapid urbanisation in our region. Consider the words of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on 15 September 2015:

"China's rapid urbanisation has led to 80 Australian architectural studios opening up in china, with a further 220 Australian firms winning work. A good example is Cox Rayner Architects which recently won a competition to design china’s 290m national maritime museum - beating a field of 80 of the worlds leading design firms in Tianjin".

Help us map and share how Australian architects are engaged and embedded around the world – embraced for our unique multicultural outlook on life, and with a reputation as highly skilled design professionals able to work in collaboration with governments, financiers, agencies and organizations in every context.

And what better way to close the morning than with the announcement of the 2015 Architects Medallion? A real statement on the future of architecture through the eye of the next generation of architects.

Speakers: Kim Herforth Neilsen (3XN), Dario Spralja (PTW), Joe Agius (Cox Architecture), Zoey Chen (Hassell), Ross Donaldson (Woods Bagot), Matthew Blair (BVN)

International conference in Paris "Architecture, the climate of the future"

As part of their ongoing commitment to responsible architecture, ever mindful of factors related to climate and the environment, the International Union of Architects (UIA), the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE), the National Council of the Order of French Architects (CNOA), and the International Council of French Architects (CIAF) announce an international conference on the theme: Architecture, the climate of the future. The symposium will take place in Paris, at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, on 30 November 2015, from 2:00 pm until 7:30 pm. on the opening day of the UN Climate Change Conference: COP 21.
The conference is organised in two parts, starting at 2 o'clock with a panel discussion to examine the impact of buildings and planning on climate change, and the role architects play in energy transition. Panellists include architects Kjetil Traedal Thorsen, Manfred Hegger, Patrick Coulombel, Anna Heringer, Carin Smuts, Pascal Gontier and David Mangin, with Sylvie Joussaume, French climatologist. A round-table will follow the panel presentations, at 5:30 pm, and will offer architects, scientists and political decision makers from France and around Europe to discuss the role of cities and buildings in the struggle against climate imbalances on two specific questions: How can cities be made resilient and sustainable? How can design become the determining factor for a building's sustainability? Participants include architects Kenneth Yeang, Edward Mazria, Frederic Bonnet and Kjetil Traedal Thorsen, energy engineer Thierry Salomon, and European Parliament members Claude Turmes and Karima Delli.
All the participating architects have oriented their careers toward finding alternative architectural and building solutions that offer a significant reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases.
This event, a joint initiative by the institutions that represent the architectural profession internationally, will enjoy the participation of their respective presidents: Esa Mohamed, Luciano Lazzari, Ms. Catherine Jacquot, and Philippe Klein – and is realised as a co-production with the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine.
